It's official
Congratulate me, I'm officially an auntie now!!! My sister's boy Asher ( I know.. its a daft name.. but hey.. if its good enough for them, its good enough for me) came bawling into this big bad world round about 4pm. I was going to see him today, but a phone call to me sister put that off. She was tired. I guess anyone would be after all this drama.
I have nothing for my sister and brother-in-law at the moment, except for these lines from Khalil Gibran. I only came to know about him late in my life, but its better late then never. More then any religious teachings, his words of wisdom has made much more sense to me then the 10 commandments or anything my mission school education has taught me.
On Children
"And a woman who held a babe against her bosom said, "Speak to us of Children." And he said:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable."
From "The Prophet" Khalil Gibran, 1923

Congratulations to your sister and new auntie you! Asher might be strange but it sounds slightly cool. :)

Well, be thankful the name isn't "London" or "Vegas" or "Beckham" or even "Dash".
There is must be some rule that states that the intellect of a parent is inverse the amount of the popularity divided by the number of celebrities in the family naming the poor child.
Yeah... I know. They claim its a bliblical name, so it must be a really obscure cameo character. Abraham's butcher maybe? haha.
Despite the fact that I am completely unreligious. I tend to favour old testament names for my (future) offspring. Vestiges of my sunday school days I guess.
It just sounds nicer.. Benjamin, Daniel, Isaac, Jonah, Seth etc. For girls, Hannah, Sarah. Old fashioned names will be the new cool! Especially since every hip young parent wants to give some fancy ya ya name to their spawn.
I predict Mary and Jane will be exotic names in 10 years. And there will be more Britneys and Lindseys running around then you can shake a stick at. :)
"Asher"? Well, R&B ambitions aside, it could be from Edgar Allen Poe's horror story.
True, but I cannot see inflicting something like "Nebuchadnezzar" or "Onan" or even "Satan" on the poor kid.
He'll end up being called "Nabu", "Wanker" and "Satay" in our schools. ;PPP
Best name I've heard for a girl was Jubilee (born in 2000). A very significant name.
Seems like everyone is going for Jewish names now.

heh.. thanks ivn, I'll come back to the pages when I need them next time.
Jewish names? Well... I haven't met anyone called Habbakuk yet! Who knows I might go off my rocker and give some new agey English next time.
When it comes to Chinese names, I might want to go for something unique and descriptive, like mine. Too many Lings and Ens and Longs. My nephew's called Wei En. That's pretty common if you ask me.
OMG.. I am getting broody. Better stop now!
Ivn, thanks for dropping by from Umami's blog!
It's a pleasure. Hope to see you and Lharm at the next Solidah outing.
;)
